A Beautiful Christmas Story

Yes, I'm still alive.

I'd like to apologize for my MIA status recently. No real excuses other than lack of time (as I'm sure you can all relate), volunteering to organize a bake sale at my son's school and Christmas craziness.

At one time I wrote new posts five times a week, I would like to start things back up, but am trying to be a bit more realistic with my current schedule and will aim for twice.  Bear with me please.

Today, I share with you a very sweet Christmas story that was sent to me on email.  I have to admit that tears came to my eyes as I read it.  There's nothing like that feeling that you get when you truly give from your heart to someone that truly needs.

______________________________________________

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma.  I was just a kid.

I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb:  "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered.  "Even dummies know that!"

My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been.  I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me.  I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her "world-famous" cinnamon buns.  I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so.  It had to be true.

Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm.  Between bites, I told her everything.  She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus?" she snorted...."Ridiculous!  Don't believe it.  That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad,  plain mad!!  Now, put on your coat, and let's go."

"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked.  I hadn't even finished my second world-famous cinnamon bun.  "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked  through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars.  That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car."  Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.

I was only eight years old.  I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself.  The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping.

For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for.

I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church.

I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker.  He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn't have a coat.  I knew that because he never went out to recess during the winter.  His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough; he didn't have a good coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement.  I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!

I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it.  It looked real warm, and he would like that.

"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. "Yes, ma'am," I replied shyly. "It's for Bobby."

The nice lady smiled at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a good winter coat.  I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag, smiled again, and wished me a Merry Christmas.

That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible) in Christmas paper and ribbons and wrote, "To Bobby, >From Santa Claus" on it.

Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy.  Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially, one of Santa's helpers.

Grandma parked down the street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going."

I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his door and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.

Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open.  Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.

Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes.
That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were  --  ridiculous.  Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.

I still have the Bible, with the coat tag tucked inside: $19.95.

May you always have LOVE to share,
HEALTH to spare and FRIENDS that care...

And may you always believe in the magic of Santa Claus!

I Like Valentine's Day

I like Valentine's Day.

I don't go crazy for all of the red stuff that shows up in malls and store windows, but I do think it's a nice idea to have a day reserved for the loves of your life.

No, we don't need a day dedicated to this; we should be living it every day, but you and I both know that life gets busy and sometimes we all need a reminder or a reason to take some time out for the special people in our lives. And I don't mean spending a lot of money or buying lavish gifts - just time and effort will do.

With kids who don't quite understand the concept of Valentine's Day yet, I thought some special edible treats would do the trick:

Pink Smoothies

Heart-Shaped French Toast with Jam & Swedish Berries

Cranberries

(Deflated) Cupcakes

Hope you had a great day and managed an extra hug or love note to someone close.

Happy New Year

Well, here it is - 2011! Can you believe it.

I remember a few years pre-2000 thinking and planning what would be the coolest way to ring in the new millenium ... and now it's 2011!  This whole year thing keeps on picking up speed.

The best thing about being a couple of time zones west of home when you are celebrating new year's is you can call everyone at 10 p.m., wish them well and then hit the sack before the clock strikes twelve.  I know, how lame! Yup, I guess so. I'm pre-writing this on the 23rd so we'll see what we actually got up to ... probably depend a lot on how the kids are adjusting to the time change.

So what did you do to ring in the new year?  Do tell.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all of you and your families!

I hope you have a wonderful day filled with amazement, laughter, wrapping paper (don't forget to recycle), delicious food, hugs, family stories, and fun car rides between family visits.

My family and I will be heading south of the border to visit family tomorrow so there may be some re-posted stories this week. My apologies but I know you understand.

Cheers to the moments and the memories of Christmas mornings past and present.

Where To Put All That Wrapping Stuff on Christmas Morning?

So if your house looks anything like mine right now, it's a scary site and I can't imagine Christmas morning - paper, bows, boxes, tissue - too much fun!

A few years back, when I was working in a communications job, I had to put together a media release all about holiday items and how they all stacked up re: recycling, garbage and green bin. Thought I would share so you can sort accordingly. Here goes:

RECYCLABLE
  • Non-metallic wrapping paper
  • Greeting cards, envelopes, gift cards and tags
  • Cardboard packaging and boxes (with all plastic wrap removed and put in garbage)
  • 2007 calendars (coils removed)
  • Aluminum foil, plates and trays
  • Plastic bakery containers (muffin trays, cupcake trays, etc.)
  • Egg nog cartons, milk and juice containers
NOT RECYCLABLE
  • Shiny metallic-coated wrapping paper
  • Tissue paper
  • Ribbons, bows, beads, string, garland and tinsel
  • Rigid plastic packaging (used on electronics and toy packaging)
  • Batteries (these items need to be taken to hazardous waste depot)
  • Bubble wrap and styrofoam

GREEN BIN
  • Coffee grounds, filters and tea bags
  • Paper napkins
  • Christmas dinner leftovers
Keep in mind, these facts were compiled for York Region, and information may vary in different geographic locations.

The Portable North Pole: Amazing For Kids

Have you heard about this?

My friend sent it to me a few weeks ago (thanks Erin!) and I finally sat down and looked at the link and did it for my kids.

It's this amazing site that sends a video message from Santa to your children, with specifics like what they asked for this Christmas, what behaviours they have been working hard at, pictures from the year, etc.

My kids love it and have watched ten times already.

I know you're busy, but worth a peak if you have a few minutes - the kids will undoubtedly enjoy it.

The Holidays: Think Big Picture

How often do you:
  • Tell your loved ones how you really feel? (I'm talking the positive feelings here not the other ones)
  • Give them a sincere compliment about something they have accomplished or done in their lives?
  • Genuinely listen (from start to finish) to a story that they are telling about themselves without sharing or interrupting?
  • Get down to play with a niece or nephew or listen to what is going on with them instead of "in a minute" "after dinner" or "be there in a sec"?
  • Put real effort into bringing something for dinner?
  • Sit and talk to a grandparent
  • Say "I miss you" or "I love you" like you really mean it - eye contact, squeeze of the shoulders, big hug
  • Take a moment to absorb the family gathering, appreciate that you have people around you (regardless of how different everyone is), take it for what it is and enjoy it?
Christmas, the holidays and all the gatherings that go along with this time of year are upon us.  No regrets.  I find if I consciously try to do something special, from the heart and meaningful, it helps to feel the true meaning of the holidays. Soak it all up - the good, the bad and the ugly. If I try to look at the big picture, rather than all the nitty gritty details and personalities :), the bad and the ugly tend to disappear.

Gift Cards: Are You Giving Them This Year?

Gift Cards.  You either like them or you don't.

And for the record, I don't mind getting them and I don't mind giving them ... for certain situations.

What I don't like though and what is a bit of a holiday pet peeve of mine, is when people ask for gift cards.  It is a family joke in fact as when I ask relatives for gift ideas, they respond by saying "I know you don't like to give gift cards but ..."

See, if I choose to give a gift card, that's fine, but if I ask for ideas and the response is various gift cards, it kind of feels like I'm being asked to forgo picking something personal and to instead just provide cash.

I mean come on, I'm not 70 years old, I'm nobody's great aunt, I am in contact with anyone I buy for on a regular basis, yes I am a stay-at-home-mom but that doesn't mean I'm not exposed to current pop culture and I don't live in a cave ( ... although there was that period of time we did not have cable? ...). I do have gift-giving abilities you know!

And just to be clear, gift cards do come into play for me sometimes - there are people on my list that are tough to buy for and if I get totally stumped - sure, those far away that shipping is a consideration - gift cards are perfect, individuals I like to surprise with something small and unexpected, absolutely, why not?

So here's my proposal to all my friends and family, as my 3-year-old son would say, "this is the deal": next year give me some real ideas and I will be sure to get a gift receipt just in case my present picking is not to your satisfaction.  But I'm pretty confident in my selection process so I don't think you'll need it.

Happy Holidays whether you're a gift card giver, getter or choose not to 'er.

This Morning in Pictures

Ahhh, the "fun" of veering from the usual daily/weekly routine. As most of you know (and are experiencing first-hand on a second-to-second basis), school is out for two weeks. This means, no JK, no nursery school, no programs, etc. This also means house destruction, going stir crazy, the need to plan days and enough activities to keep busy, Christmas sugar highs, company and an energy level that is seen only once a year.

Pictures below to illustrate our morning. We in fact, did have a lot of fun.

Hallway debris post a few games

Dog had a Christmas party for all of the stuffies.

Our homemade Christmas tree made this a.m.
Good luck to everyone. May the force be with you.

And for those of you who do not have kids and may be thinking, what's the big deal? Or perhaps, you're thinking that everyone should just be soaking up all this added quality bonding that can occur this week between parent and child ... it's not that I don't love being with my kids. It's just the constant added "on" ness and sustained energy level that is required with none of the usual breaks to give you mini-boosts and refreshers.

Recommendation:  pre-plan your days - meals, crafts, outdoor activity, visit with someone. Way better than winging it.

Here's to the fact I ate waaaaay too many sweets last night.  I was going with the theory that if I ingest as much as possible in one sitting, that it may curtail my snackings on the same material in the days to come.  Yeah, I 'll let you know how that works out for me.  Usually works until about 1:00 p.m.

Christmas Card Decor: My Final Decision

A couple of weeks ago I wrote to you with a dilemma of what to do with Christmas cards? I love getting them, I just never know what to do with them when they arrive so they don't take up various junky looking piles throughout my entire home.

Well, last Friday I was possessed by the Christmas Decorating Spirit (or something) because while the kids were napping I put a giant garland filled with all the trimmings across a giant bay window we have in our living room and I made a final decision on what to do with those damn cards. Voila:

This picture window opens to my front hall on one side and my kitchen eating area on the other.

It's not perfect, but I like it and it eliminates the clutter while allowing me to look at them.  And it was relatively easy - a couple of nails to hang from, some pieces of ribbon and a stapler.

Thank you to everyone who wrote in and shared their thoughts and traditions. Thank you to Elise/Anonymous for her idea of hanging the cards from ribbons.

Stay tuned today for results of our Glitzy Blitz prize giveaways.

P.S. Happy Birthday Wendy!

Random Thoughts From A Drug Store

So I'm wandering through Shopper's Drug Mart a couple of nights ago after a yoga class trying to do the mom thing and squeeze another to-do list item - stocking stuffers - into the busy schedule when I was baffled by some of the things I saw ...

Microwavable dinners for babies? I know we're all busy, but we need to draw a line somewhere don't we? ...

Top coat nail polishes for $14 .... come on. There goes that idea out the door. Looks like I'll be chipped this holiday season. I'd rather five lattes ...

Spray on legs? Are you serious? I know we're all supposed to be self-conscious of our pale legs, but we need to learn to love ourselves a bit more. Embrace the pasty skin tone that is winter, slap on a pair of nude hose or better yet, slip into some opaque tights. Save some cash, embrace your realness ...

Electronic books designed to read our kids to sleep? Hmmmm ... I'm still not sold on electronic books altogether because I do still believe in the old fashion paper pages, but this which promotes an electronic device being in your child's bed and with him in his last precious moments before falling asleep. No way jose! We need to be there.

So there you have it, my trip to the drug store.

Enjoy your weekend. Happy Christmas and holiday prepping. You have until Sunday at 8 p.m. to enter into the draw. I will announce the winners on Monday.

If you like the blog, show me! Simply click on the "subscribe to email" button on the top right-hand corner, click on "follow" button in right-hand column or email a post or this site to a friend and copy cashmereandcarrots@gmail.com - it's that easy! GLITZY BLITZ Gift Ideas

It's the final countdown until Christmas and many of us are still desperately searching for that perfect gift ... or well simply a gift that will do.  I have happened across some neat stores and ideas this year and thought I would share, just in case you wanted some inspiration or ideas. These ideas may not be your thang, but it's my blog and I'm going to share them anyways ;)

For The Kids:

Cloud B Twilight Constellation Night Light
-Super cool night light available in two different shapes. Glows in the dark and puts out neat constellations up on the ceiling.  Available at Amazon or just google it for more details. Under $40. There are two under my tree.

Snowball and Ice Block makers
-I've seen these at Toys R' Us, Mastermind Toys and online. If the kids are old enough to play outside on their own or even with parents, fun little tools to help out with building and games. Under $20.

My son has gone crazy for these. The best part is that they have anything and everything - cowboys, knights, farm/jungle/sea animals, fairies, dinosaurs and more!  They are wonderful as they are durable, high quality and amazing for pretend play and creating imaginary and real world scenarios. Papo is another brand with similar figures. Figures are approximately $6-20 depending on the item and size.

I had forgotten about this idea but have received one from a friend years ago. Very sweet idea for loved ones but especially cool and practical for little people who are really into puzzles. what better puzzle than one that features you and your friends/family. Note: this is just one company I found on a quick google search but there are many many more out there http://www.jigsaw2order.com/.
Dress Up Clothes
Dress up clothes are so fun and really help little ones get into their imaginations. Whether it's a cape, princess dress, hat or doctor gear, this gift will be used and create memorable moments. Everyone needs a tickle trunk.  Costumes are available at most toy stores, but check out this group I discovered at the One of A Kind Show: http://www.dreampowercostumes.com/

Puppets
Another company I saw at the One of A Kind Show:
www.banjopuppets.com

Musical Instruments
Music is so important for kids and they love it. Even if you are not so musically inclined, a drum, some shakers or a kazoo even!

ADULTS

Perfect girlfriend or sister gift. Beautiful cotton, cute designs. Undies, jammies, dresses and more. I can't say who I bought for as they read this :) http://thecandifactory.com

Anything from perfume to peanut butter and jelly to jewellery to flowers. You name it there is a month club for it. Worth a look and great for people that live far away from you.http://www.club-offers.com/

Wine of the Month Club: Savor two bottles of wine from two different award-winning wineries worldwide each month when you join Wine of the Month.

Gourmet Cheese of the Month Club
Sample extraordinary cheeses from the finest traditional cheese manufacturers the world has to offer. 3 half-pound blocks of cheeses each month, Great for holiday or special occasion gift-giving, Free monthly newsletter with tasting notes

Kind of cheesy, but I got my brother who LOVES the Minnesota Vikings this personalized NFL scoreboard:

For the record, he is very hard to buy for so rather than get him a shirt for the 10th time in a row, I got him something he can hang up in his new place (he is a recent college grad). the Personalization Mall has ANYTHING and EVERYTHING personalized - classy to assy - check it out.

Anyways, this post is much too long as it is so I'm going to stop there.

Most of you are probably already done shopping but for those who are not, maybe this gave you an idea.

Happy Scouring the Malls!

GLITZY BLITZ Shopping Rules For Men
(compliments of Little Prairie Baby)

Some of us have husbands who are not that bad at shopping and choosing out female-ish gifts and some of us  ... well ... have husbands whose strengths lie strictly in the power-tools aisle and in stores rhyming with Dome Sheep-O!  (Note: hubby, if you are reading this, thank you, you are of the former description plus some).

Read this on Little Prairie Baby - a sweet, down-to-earth, funny and honest blog I enjoy reading. This particular post pertains to Shopping Rules for Men. I have pasted below, but I encourage you to check the whole blog out when you have a chance (Bud is the person the rules were originally intended for).

BUD'S GIFT GIVING GUIDELINES
-always consult guide before buying a gift
-NEVER disregard ANY rules in guide
-post somewhere you will never lose or forget about it
  • If you can write it off-do not even consider this an option.
  • DO NOT look in stores like Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, UFA, Peavy Mart, or Mark's Work Warehouse. If a store sells similar stuff as the above listed stores walk, no RUN away!
  • Consult with your mom or sisters until you have the hang of gift giving-if they say it's terrible-IT'S TERRIBLE-don't go ahead with the plan!
  • Listen for hints...some hints might not be intentional and they may not be direct at all. Listen for phrases like "Maybe I'll wait for January sales to buy that rusty star!" Take heed!
  • Wrap with care (or get your sister to.) Putting time and care into wrapping, and a card makes it more personal. It makes it look like more thought was placed into it, rather than just picking something up at Cactus Corner while you fueled up.
  • If it cleans up the yard, house, vehicle...helps a person cook...do laundry, etc, this is a STUPID idea. No matter what, a gift should not involve ANY work or be any kind of household appliance. Gifts should be some kind joy and luxury...not work. This is a KEY rule-tears or anger may result if ignored.
  • Gifts should be bought at girly shops that make you uncomfortable and makes you keep your hands to yourself, so you don't break anything!

Hope you enjoyed. Remember to enter in this week's Glitzy Blitz draw for Sephora and Starbucks gifts. Click here for a refresher on how to enter.

Stay Happy and Flu-Free This Holiday Season

Guest Blogger Alert:  Susan Slipacoff (Naturopathic Doctor)

Staying Happy and Flu-Free This Holiday Season

Who wants to spend their holidays miserable, coughing and sneezing on everyone they meet? Think of the to-do list, the baking, the entertaining and of course the present opening - of course we all want to be healthy, happy and full of good cheer.  Well, I'm here to tell you that yes, you can stay happy and flu-free this holiday season. One easy way to help your cause is by making sure you and your family are getting enough vitamin D.

Vitamin D has been in the news a lot lately and is amazing as it does so much for us. Some of its benefits include: making our immune systems healthier-armed and ready to fight off colds and germs; prevention of autoimmune diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis), cancer and osteoporosis; as well as staving off seasonal affective disorder and other mood-related conditions.

It is true that we can get vitamin D from the sun, but the mistake people make is assuming that they are getting adequate amounts of vitamin D just by being out in the sun from time to time. Due to the risk of skin cancer and the decreased strength of the sun during the winter months, research shows that we need amounts of vitamin D over and above what we get from being outside.

How much vitamin D is necessary?  1000IU/day is recommended in ADDITION to exposing your skin to sunlight for 5-10 minutes at least a couple of times a week. You do not need a prescription for vitamin D and you can buy it at your local drugstore.

Everybody is different when it comes to their vitamin D so consider getting your blood levels tested to reveal what is needed for your own body.

I wish you all a Happy (and healthy of course!) New Year.

Jazz up your wardrobe with an ornate headband. Don't settle for a plain black band. Go for something with a large bow, flower or feather on top.

If It Don't Shine, Leave It Behind!
This season is all about glitter, shine and metallics. If you are a bold person, then wear a sequin dress. If you want just a small dose, then wear a sequin hat or scarf or carry a clutch that is full of bling.

The Little Black Blazer
Forget the shawl or wrap - leave that for Grandma. Cover yourself up with a black blazer - whether it's a boyfriend cut, a bolero or a tuxedo style jacket - it will jazz up your outfit.
