Monkey Hooks: Bye Bye Gigantic Drywall Holes

For all of you who are commitment phobic when it comes to hanging pictures or just plain scared to start pounding and screwing holes in your precious drywall, this post is for you.

This past weekend, we bought a new mirror - a huge, new mirror. It's approximately two-and-a-half feet by six feet and weighs, I don't know?, 40 pounds?

New Mirror - apologies for messy room in refelection.

Needless to say, a bit apprehensive about attempting to hang it on the wall, especially knowing the size of holes you have to drill for drywall plugs and never being 100 per cent sure whether you're about to hit a stud or not (that's the wood stud ladies, not a hot guy!).  But better to attempt hanging it, then have my two boys wrestle with it on the wall and undoubtedly pull it over on them and hurt them and shatter the mirror.

When I was at Home Depot, I was handed Monkey Hooks?!

Have you heard of these?

To be honest, they look kind of wimpy and more like a giant fish hook then an apparatus that will help me securely hold my new mirror on the wall.

They are amazing! The idea behind them is that you just push them into the drywall (that's right, no tools!) and push it up behind the drywall, until the only thing showing is the small hook at the end. something to do with the angle and shape of the hook, holds the weight and prohibits the hook from slipping out with the weight of the item.  These hooks are rated for 50lbs each so I was way under, but so far so good.

the best part is, if you mess up on your measuring and levelling (which we may or may not have - I'm not telling), you just pull them out and do it again, but the hole that remains is so minimal compared to that of a plug or screw, you have much less to worry or feel guilty about.

So your task this week:  go to your local hardware store, pick up some Monkey Hooks and hang that item that you have been scared to hang and is sitting in the corner just waiting for you to put it on your wall! go ahead do it!
